CMS Men's Golf Surges Into Second at Midway Point of Coyote Classic

Current Leaders after Day One

BEAUMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team jumped from seventh place to second in the closing holes of the opening day of the CSU San Bernardino Coyote Classic on Monday at Oak Valley Golf Club.

After the first round was completed on Monday afternoon, the Stags were right in the middle of the team leaderboard, placing seventh out of 13 teams. The second round then got underway after the conclusion of the first (in order to complete three rounds in two days), and CMS was able to vault up to second place at +11 when the first day was stopped due to darkness, seven shots behind Division II Colorado School of Mines, which stands at +4.

Freshman Alex Yun is tied for ninth place on the individual leaderboard at even par, thanks to an eagle in round one. Yun started at the back nine, and was even par at the 18th, then had his eagle on the first hole to go to -2, before settling for a 72.

Sophomore Mason Chiu also had a strong opening round, carding a 73 with three birdies on the day and currently stands in 12th place. He overcame a double-bogey on his third hole of the day, before coming back to even par temporarily on his 15th hole before ending with a +1.

Senior Alex Wrenn ended his first round at +2, and currently stands at +4 in 24th place overall with most of his second round completed.

CMS has a narrow lead over several teams close behind, including SCIAC rival Redlands, ranked No. 11 in Division III, which is in a three-way tie for third at +12, one shot behind the Stags. Colorado State-Pueblo and host CSU San Bernardino are also in that tie, while La Verne is tied for seventh four shots behind the Stags.

The second day of the Coyote Classic will get underway early tomorrow with the completion of the second round, before the third and final round begins in the late morning.
