Stellar Season Earns Five Stags All-SCIAC Honors
LAGUNA NIGEL, Calif. – Last week the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) announced their end of season men's golf awards. Five Stags earned All-SCIAC honors, with four grabbing First Team accolades and one being named Second Team. Head coach Bim Jollymour and assistant Mitch Fedorka received their third-straight SCIAC Coaching Staff of the Year honor after guiding the Stags to their third SCIAC Title in as many years.
Jonathan Shaw (CMC), Johnny Brandt (CMC), Ken Kong (CMC), and Alex Wrenn (CMC) all earned spots on the SCIAC's First Team while Austin Long (CMC) garnered Second Team accolades.
Shaw earns his fourth First Team All-SCIAC nod after carding a one-under, 71 in the closing round of the SCIAC Championships to help lead CMS to their 13th Conference Title in program history. The senior made four birdies in the final round and finished tied for third at the tournament.
At SCIAC No. 2, Johnny Brandt led the Stags with a six-under, 66 in the second round and was only athlete to shoot under par in the 48-player field in the final round of the tournament. His stellar round allowed him to climb the leaderboard from 33rd to second, just one stroke behind the individual medalist. Brandt continued his strong play at the SCIAC Championship, finishing one shot back of the medalist at five-under par. Brandt began the SCIAC Championships with a 68 (-4) to lead after the first day before carding a one-under, 71 on Day Two and finishing the three-day Tournament with an even-par, 72. This is the second All-SCIAC accolade for Brandt after being named Second Team a year ago.
Freshman Ken Kong earns his first-career All-Conference honor with the First Team nod. The freshman led CMS at the SCIAC No. 1, shooting one-under, 71 in the first round and a three-over, 75 in the second round. Sitting in a tie for 10th after the first day of the SCIAC Championship, Kong jumped up the leaderboard on Day Two, carding a one-under, 71 to move into a tie for fifth. On the final day of the tournament, he recorded an even-par round of 72, putting him one-over for the tournament and earning him a share of fifth-place.
Alex Wrenn earned his third All-SCIAC honor and second First Team selection with a First Team honor this season. Wrenn's strongest performance came in the Second Round of the SCIAC Championships, where the junior carded a three-under, 69 including three red numbers in a span of four holes. In the final round, he turned in a round of one-over, 73 to finish in a tie for fifth-place.
In addition to the four First Team All-SCIAC golfers, Austin Long earned a Second Team accolade. Long's best SCIAC round this year came in the first round of the SCIAC No. 2 Tournament. The sophomore carded a one-under, 71 to lead overnight. He would finish the tournament in sixth-place at five-over after a 78 on Day Two. Long would go on to finish 14th at the SCIAC Championships with rounds of 72 (E), 76 (+4), and 73 (+1).
For the third time in as many years, head coach Bim Jollymour and his coaching staff were voted the SCIAC Coaching Staff of the Year. Jollymour guided the Stags to their third-straight SCIAC Championship and the 13th in program history. CMS won the Conference Title by 33 strokes across the seven rounds with an overall team score of 2020.
The Stags will be back in action next week when they travel to Greensboro, N.C. to complete in the National Championships at the Grandover Resort. The Championships start on May 15 with a National Champion crowded on May 18.
