Shaw and Long Receive Invitations for Arnold Palmer Cup

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Austin Long (CMC) and Jonathan Shaw (CMC) of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team have been extended invitations to compete in the Arnold Palmer Cup next summer. The Arnold Palmer Cup is a Ryder Cup-style competition between the top collegiate golfers from around the world.

Evian Resort Golf Club, host of LPGA major The Evian Championship, will host the 22nd playing of the Arnold Palmer Cup on July 6-8, 2018.  The Evian Resort is located in Évian-les-Bains, France and will host the first-ever Arnold Palmer Cup contested in continental Europe.

Long and Shaw headline a strong CMS squad that currently ranks ninth in the nation. Playing in four rounds this fall, Long led the team with a 70.25 scoring average while Shaw competed in six rounds in the fall and posted a 70.5 scoring average. Both Shaw and Long carded low rounds of 66 and sit in the top-five nationally in terms of scoring averages.

The 2018 Arnold Palmer Cup teams will be announced Thursday, March 15 at Arnold Palmer's Bay Hill Club & Lodge during the first round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

About The Arnold Palmer Cup

The Arnold Palmer Cup was co-founded by Arnold Palmer and The Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) and began at the Bay Hill Club & Lodge, Orlando, Fla. in 1997. The event is a Ryder Cup-style tournament featuring the top male university/college golfers matching the United States against Europe. In 2018, the participants will include corresponding women golfers who will be added to both the USA and International teams and will thus become the only major tournament which features men and women playing side-by-side as partners.

Since its inception, 101 former Arnold Palmer Cup alumni have gone on to earn cards on either the PGA or European Tours, 22 alumni have gone on to represent Europe or the USA in the Ryder Cup or Presidents Cup, and 47 have claimed 172 victories on the PGA or European Tours. The United States leads the series 10-9-1.
