Superb rounds by Shaw and Brandt bring Stags back to first

CHINO HILLS, Calif. – After a fourth place finish in the first day of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team came back on Monday with a much-improved performance and scored 291 to climb up to first place. Both juniors Jonathan Shaw (CMC) and Johnny Brandt (CMC) led the Stags with a 71 to improve their overall score. The Stags currently have a 590-stroke total after the first two rounds, and are four strokes ahead of La Verne and Redlands.

CMS still sits behind La Verne in the conference standings by four strokes and also holds a narrow four-stroke lead over Redlands. An outstanding showing in the final round can push the Stags to the top.

Shaw continued where he left off, scoring three birdies and three pars in the first half. However, three straight bogeys from the 11th to 13th hole pushed him over par, but the junior finished strong with two birdies on the last two holes to climb up to second place on the individual leaderboard.

Brandt played well at the No. 4 spot, improving from his first round performance by five strokes. After earning a birdie on the 13th hole, Brandt finished off the last five holes with a par.

Junior Matt Shuman (CMC) had a consistent start to his round, scoring all pars in the first nine. However, three bogeys in the back nine prevented him from finishing even. Sophomore Alex Wrenn (CMC) had a better day than his first round by four strokes. Wrenn earned a birdie on a par five and a par four in the first half, but a double-bogey in the 11th hole hurt his momentum, leading him to finish at a very respectable 74.

The Stags will close out the tournament tomorrow, with freshman Austin Long (CMC) leading the first group of CMS golfers and teeing off at 9:06 a.m. The Stags will be grouped with Redlands, La Verne, and Cal Lutheran.
