Tight field in men’s SCIAC Champs
CHINO HILLS, Calif. – Only four strokes separated the top four teams in the first day of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships on Sunday. The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team sits in fourth place in the tournament with a team score of 299, trailing the leader, La Verne at 295.
CMS is now 12 strokes behind the Leopards in the conference standings with just two rounds left to decide who will earn the automatic qualification to the NCAA National Championships.
All six of the Stags improved as the day wore on. Junior Jonathan Shaw (CMC) caught fire on the back nine and ended up in a tie for fourth place individually. After a bogey on the tenth hole, he rattled off five pars and three birdies to finish the round with a 73.
Playing as the No. 6, freshman Harrison Brenner (CMC) shot even par on the last nine to shoot a 74 on the day. Junior Johnny Brandt (CMC) was also even on the back nine due to an eagle on the 18th. Brandt managed a three on the 592-yard par five to close it out. Junior Matt Shuman (CMC) also went low on 18, allowing him to get one stroke back and now sits at 4-over after Sunday's round.
Sophomore Alex Wrenn (CMC) was second in the field in number of pars at 14 on the day. Unfortunately, two par fours, one on each nine, interrupted his consistency and he came in with a 78.
Tomorrow, the Stags will once again pair with Redlands and La Verne, but not Pomona-Pitzer as Cal Lutheran leapt above the Sagehens in the conference standings by two strokes. Whittier, Chapman, Occidental, and PP will tee off at 10 a.m. followed by the Stags and company at 11:06 a.m.
