Strong third round boosts Stags at WNMU Tourney
GOODYEAR, Ariz. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team improved with each round at the Western New Mexico University Fall Intercollegiate Tournament played at the Golf Club of Estrella to place in seventh. Head coach Bim Jollymour was proud of the team for their resilience to bounce back from the shaky first round to pull out a strong finish.
The tournament featured 20 programs, predominantly from NCAA Division II, and included three rounds over two days of competition. The shotgun start began CMS at the 16th, 17th, and 18th holes to begin each round.
The Stags recorded a 303 on the first round, good for 14th place. In that round, sophomore Alex Wrenn (CMC) led the way with a 1-over highlighted by a birdie on the fourth hole. Junior Jonathan Shaw (CMC) came in just over Wrenn with a 3-over 75 with birdies on two of the final three holes of his round.
Each of the five CMS players finished the second round at a 77 or lower, improving their team placement up to eighth. Of the 90 holes played, the Stags made 59 pars and 11 birdies. Junior Johnny Brandt (CMC) shot his best round of the tournament at 77 with 12 pars. In his second collegiate tournament, freshman Austin Long (CMC) put up two 75s in the second and third rounds of the tournament and ultimately finished in a tie for 34th in the individual standings.
The whole field was unable to finish the round before it was deemed too dark so the final hole or two was wrapped up on Tuesday morning.
The Stags posted their best round of the tournament in the final day with a 297, four strokes better than the second round. Three CMS players shot 74s: Wrenn, Shaw and junior Joe LaHorgue (CMC). In the team standings, CMS finished better than all three of the teams it was paired with. CSU San Bernardino finished in 14th, Benedictine came in at 20th and the Stags edged Midwestern State by one stroke.
Wrenn finished in the highest place for the Stags. He tied for 18th in the field of 107 players.
Next up for the men's team in the fall is a tournament between the Stags and the University of La Verne on Oct. 7 at Los Serranos Country Club.
