Josh Angle Earns SCIAC Men's Basketball Athlete of the Year Honor

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Senior gaurd Josh Angle earned the 2023-24 SCIAC Men's Basketball Athlete of the Year award for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in a vote of the league's coaches, the conference office announced today.

Angle also earned a spot on the All-SCIAC first team for the third year in a row, while Rhett Carter captured a spot on the second team.

Angle enters the postseason this weekend averaging 19.0 points per game on 50.6 percent shooting from the floor, despite taking over half of his attempts from three-point territory. He also contributes 4.8 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.7 steals per contest for a Stags team that stands at 18-6 on the year (13-3 in SCIAC).

Despite seeing limited action as a freshman in 2019-20, Angle is now tied for the CMS record for career three-pointers with 222 heading into the SCIAC Postseason Tournament, and is ranked No. 6 in program history in career points with 1540. He began the regular season with 30 points in a win over UC Santa Cruz and ended it on Tuesday with 27 in a win over Whittier, while tying his career high with seven three-pointers, matching the total he had when dropping 37 last year in a win over No. 2 Mary Hardin-Baylor.

Carter heads into the SCIAC Tournament adding 13.2 points and a team-high 6.0 rebounds per game, while shooting 56.1 percent from the floor. He has 960 career points, giving him a chance to join the 1000-point club during the postseason, while he has also totaled 450 career rebounds. He has now earned All-SCIAC distinction in each of the last two seasons, after making the first team a year ago.

CMS will be the No. 2 seed in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament, and will host No. 3 seed Pomona-Pitzer in the semifinals tonight at 7 p.m. The winner will move on to Saturday's championship game against the winner between top-seeded Cal Lutheran and fourth-seeded Chapman.
