Rhett Carter Earns Second SCIAC Weekly Honor for CMS Men's Basketball

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Rhett Carter of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team earned the SCIAC Offensive Player of the Week Award for games through Sunday, Jan. 21, the conference office announced today.

Carter earned the honor after shooting 19-24 from the floor in a pair of CMS victories, while commiting no turnovers on the week as well. He shot 13-15 from the floor on his way to 27 points in a big 82-78 home win over Pomona-Pitzer in a battle between two teams that came into the day tied for first place in the SCIAC, and added a 6-for-9 effort for 12 points in a 70-55 win at La Verne on Wednesday.

Carter was also big down the stretch for the Stags in the Pomona-Pitzer win, making his last seven shots from the floor in a row, including four in a span of five possessions, beginning with less than six minutes to play. Three of those four late baskets answered Sagehen scores to push the CMS lead back up from two points to four points and make it a two-possession game.

It marks the second time this season that Carter has earned the award, after also tallying it following a 21-point, 16-rebound effort in a 60-55 win over Cal Lutheran in December. It is also the third week in a row that CMS has won the award, after Caelan Jones earned it on Jan. 8 following a big performance in an overtime win over Redlands, and Josh Angle earned it last week after making the winning free throws with 1.2 seconds left in a win at Occidental.

CMS will take an 11-game winning streak into the rematch with Cal Lutheran on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. Both teams come in at 7-1 in league play, with the winner taking over sole possession of first place in the SCIAC.
