CMS Men's Basketball Moves to 8-2 in SCIAC with 68-55 Win over Caltech

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Josh Angle had 21 points and Rhett Carter added 16 as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team kept in the SCIAC title hunt by defending its home court in a 68-55 win over Caltech on Saturday afternoon at Roberts Pavilion.

With the win, the 19th-ranked Stags move to 16-3 on the year and 8-2 in the SCIAC, staying one game behind Redlands and Pomona-Pitzer in the loss column (who both have games later this evening). Caltech slips to 5-14 overall and 2-8 in league play.

Brian Kenyon continued his outstanding two-way play at the point guard spot with nine assists and one turnover, to go along with five steals. He now averages 7.1 assists per game, and has an assist-to-turnover ratio of 5.4-to-1 (134 assists, 25 turnovers).

CMS had to grind it out for a while, trailing for a good portion of the first half before closing on a 6-0 run to take a 34-29 lead into the break. Carter hit two baskets in the run, sandwiched around one from Lucas McEachern

Angle started the second half with a basket to make it an 8-0 run, and then hit three foul shots to give the Stags their first double-digit lead at 45-34 with 15:11 left.  A James Frye three-point play stretched the lead to its largest point at 52-36 with 11:27 left, and the Beavers were unable to get the lead down to single digits the rest of the way.

Kiran Kruse was also in double figures for CMS with 12 points, and added four steals, while Frye was just short with nine points.

CMS will be back in action on Wednesday when it hosts La Verne for a 7 p.m. contest, looking to avenge one of its two SCIAC losses.
