Matt Meredith Earns SCIAC Defensive Player of the Week for CMS Men's Basketball

CLAREMONT, Calif. - First-year forward Matt Meredith earned the SCIAC Men's Defensive Player of the Week Award for games through Sunday, Dec. 5, the league office announced today.

Meredith played a key role in helping CMS out to a 2-0 start in league play with a pair of strong defensive efforts, as the Stags held La Verne (58) and Pomona-Pitzer (53) to under 60 points. Meredith combined for four blocks and five steals on the week, totaling two of each against La Verne and two blocks and three steals against the Sagehens.

In addition to his individual numbers, Meredith also helped hold the starting forward on Pomona-Pitzer to a combined 2-17 shooting as CMS won a 57-53 defensive battle. He also contributed on the offensive end, knocking down a key three-pointer in the final minute that doubled the Stag lead from 48-45 to 51-45, finishing with eight points and nine rebounds.

Meredith becomes the second CMS men's basketball player to earn a SCIAC weekly honor this season. Josh Angle was named the Offensive Player of the Week after scroing 30 points in the season opener, a win over Puget Sound.

CMS, which is now 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the SCIAC, will be back in action for two non-league home games this weekend, taking on California Miramar on Friday night at 7 p.m., and UC Santa Cruz on Sunday at 4 p.m.
