Loggers' Pressure Too Much for Stags in Wells Classic Finale

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The University of Puget Sound Loggers levered high-pressure and a deep bench to top the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team on Saturday night by an 87-74 final. The Loggers brought full-court pressure from the opening whistle and subbed in five new players seemingly every minute to sustain the pressure throughout the game.

The pressure worked early, as the Loggers jumped out to a 16-5 lead just 4:31 into the game. Later in the half CMS trailed 28-21, but closed out the half on a 22-10 run to take a 43-38 lead into the break. A Miles President (HMC) layup six minutes into the second-half put CMS up 57-46. That 11-point lead was their largest of the game.

Following the layup from President, Puget Sound held the Stags scoreless over the next five minutes. During the CMS scoring drought, the Loggers scored 14-straight points to take a 60-57 lead. The Stags would close the gap to as few as two following a Mitchell Kirsch (CMC) layup at 65-63 and again after a pair of free throws from Jack Ely (CMC) at 67-65.

The Loggers' pressure helped Puget Sound close out the game on a 20-9 run in the final 4:46 to pull out the 87-74 victory.

Miles President stuffed the stat sheet with 20 points on an 8-11 shooting performance. He also added five rebounds, four assists, and a steal. Ely joined President in double-figures with 12 points while Kendrick Morris grabbed 11 rebounds and scored eight points. Off the bench, Mitchell Kirsch scored seven points in 26 minutes of action.

The Stags will be off until next Saturday when they host California Miramar University at 7:00 p.m. in Roberts Pavilion.
