Stags dealt hard-fought loss to Warriors

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team (6-1, 1-0) saw their winning streak come to a close as they took a hard-fought 80-64 loss to Westmont College (11-1, 2-0) on Saturday night. Junior Michael Scarlett (CMC) did his best to keep the Stags in the game, scoring 18 points and making all four of his three-point attempts. Scarlett also grabbed seven rebounds while junior Kendrick Morris (CMC) scored 10 points and grabbed six boards. The Warriors' offense, on the other hand, was on point, with two players scoring in double-figures off the bench, while starting guard Cory Blau scored 20 points and dished out five assists.

The Stags looked evenly matched in the beginning of the first half after freshman Miles President (HMC) knocked in a triple to tie the game at eight apiece with 14:52 left at the half. However, the Warriors went on a 13-0 run after converting several turnovers into fast break layups. Trailing 21-8, President scored a three-pointer and a jumper and sophomore Evan Davis (CMC) scored from beyond the arc to keep the deficit in single digits. With 3:12 left in the half, Westmont scored 15 straight points to end the half with a 46-21 lead.

Westmont continued to control the game in the second half and worked their way to a 60-37 lead with 11:53 left in the game, but the Stags regrouped for another run to keep the game close. Senior Scott Lynds (CMC) got the run started with a three-point jumper and Davis followed with a mid-range basket. Morris got to work in the post, scoring a layup followed by two free throws and a dunk to cap an 11-5 run. But then the Warriors' offense woke up and continued to trade baskets with the Stags until the buzzer.

CMS will shake off the loss and enjoy an extended break for the week. They will host Emerson College on Wednesday, Dec. 28 at 6 pm and play again on Thursday, Dec. 29 at home to play Oberlin College.
