Stags unable to contain Chapman in 77-71 loss

CLAREMONT, Calif. – In a rematch of the 2015 SCIAC Tournament finale, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team was unable to pull out the win against Chapman, 77-71. After a high-scoring, evenly-played first half, a close game was expected down the stretch.

Both teams shot impressively well from the field in the first half, each over 50%. Additionally, the rebound count was exactly even at 32 apiece in the game. The differences were the Stags' 12 turnovers to CU's six and Chapman's Cam Haslam. In SCIAC play, Haslam averages over 20 points a game. Tonight against the Stags, Haslam went for 20 in the first half and ultimately 37 on the night.

Three Stags were in double-digit scoring as senior Jack Earley (CMC) and sophomore Michael Scarlett (CMC) led the charge with 13 points each. Right behind them was senior Shelby Lane (CMC) with 11 points and his fifth double-double of the season.

As the time wound down, CMS was unable to pull off a timely shot, forcing them to foul in order to regain possession in an attempt for more opportunities.

CMS (7-7, 1-4 SCIAC) next hosts Redlands (6-8, 2-3 SCIAC) on Wednesday, Jan. 20 in Rains Center.
