NAIA No. 12 Concordia takes down CMS

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Coming off their big win over Pomona-Pitzer, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team faced a formidable foe in Concordia and came up short 66-60 on Saturday, Dec. 14 at Ducey Gym. The Stags played good defense but were outscored by the Eagles, the 2012 NAIA National Champions.

Concordia, currently ranked #12 in NAIA Division I, came into the game with an 8-2 record.

The Eagles took an early 6-0 lead but CMS fought back to tie up the game at 18 points with a layup by junior guard Jack Grodahl. CMS had 12 offensive rebounds to Concordia's one, but unfortunately turned the ball over to the Eagles 15 times. The Stags' defense held the Eagles to 26 points and trailed 26-21 at the half.

There was much more scoring in the second half but the Stags were unable to overcome the halftime deficit. CMS improved from being down by 10 points to get within three on a few occasions. In the final 38 seconds, senior guard Tyler Gaffaney scored eight points for CMS, but CMS was unable garner the win. The final score was 66-60 in the Eagles' favor. Gaffaney led the Stags with 14 points.

Concordia's defense forced the Stags to shoot only 35 percent from the field on the night. The Stags shot 88 percent from the foul line with Grodahl going 7-of-8 and senior guard Remy Pinson 4-of-4. Grodahl finished second on the team with 11 points while Pinson, sophomore forward Jason Harrington, sophomore center Nick Lund and sophomore guard Jack Earley had six points and freshman guard Scott Lynds added five.

Conversely, Donnell Phifer scored 29 points on the night for the Eagles.

CMS finished their pre-break schedule 5-4 and will return to Ducey Gym to play Calvin on Dec. 30 at 7 p.m.
