Thanio Bright Earns SCIAC Defensive Player of the Week Award
CLAREMONT, Calif. - Thanio Bright of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps football team earned Defensive Player of the Week honors for games through Saturday, Sept. 3, the conference office announced today.
Bright had his first two career interceptions as CMS came away with a 24-15 road win over Chicago on Saturday, in a battle between two teams that were coming off seven-win seasons. His first one came at the end of the first half, with CMS leading 17-15 and the Maroons already in scoring position, when he picked off a pass at the Stag 2-yard line to enable CMS to stay in the lead going into the break. He ran the interception back 85 yards, nearly giving CMS a chance to try a field goal on the final play of the half, but a penalty brought the spot back to midfield.
His second interception came midway through the fourth quarter to kill a Chicago drive in CMS territory and keep the Stags in front by two scores. He also added a key tackle on the final play of the third quarter one yard short of the marker on third down, and the Maroons turned the ball over on downs when they were stuffed on the following play.
CMS will be back in action after a bye week when it hosts its home opener at Zinda Field against George Fox on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 12:30 p.m.
