Joey Asta Earns SCIAC Defensive Player of the Week Honors
CLAREMONT, Calif. - Junior linebacker Joey Asta earned the SCIAC Defensive Player of the Week award for games through Saturday, Nov. 5, the league office announced today.
Asta had three sacks and a fumble recovery as the CMS football team shut out Redlands in a dominant 42-0 win. Asta raised his total to 9.5 sacks on the season (five of which have come in two games against Redlands) and helped CMS to its fourth straight game without allowing a touchdown.
CMS also did not allow a home touchdown all season, allowing only nine points in four home games (three field goals, two from Chapman in a 28-6 win and one from Cal Lutheran in a 41-3 win). Asta earned a spot on the D3football.com National Team of the Week following the first Redlands contest, when he had eight tackles (four for losses) and two sacks.
CMS improved to 5-0 in SCIAC play with the win (7-1 overall) and will face Pomona-Pitzer (4-1 SCIAC) on Saturday for the Sixth Street Trophy and an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. Kickoff at Pomona-Pitzer's Merritt Field is slated for 1 p.m.
