Justin Edwards Wins Second SCIAC Offensive Player of the Week Honor for CMS Football

CLAREMONT, Calif. - For the second time this season, first-year running back Justin Edwards has earned the SCIAC Offensive Player of the Week Award for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps football team, the league office announced today.

Edwards earned it this week after carrying the ball 27 times for 174 yards and three touchdowns as the Stags stayed in the SCIAC Championship chase with a 34-10 win over La Verne. Edwards had 104 yards rushing and two touchdowns in the first half to stake CMS to a 13-10 halftime lead, and then tacked on a third touchdown in the second half to seal it.

Back on Sept. 25, Edwards earned it for the first time after carrying for 204 yards and four touchdowns in a 29-21 win over Chapman, which the Stags meet again on the road on Saturday in a battle between the two teams tied for second in the league. He also had 229 yards last weekend against Cal Lutheran and is up to 874 this season, needing just 126 more to be the ninth CMS running back to have a 1000-yard season.

The Stags have now had five different SCIAC weekly honors this season, after Dylan Porter won the Defensive Player of the Week honor last weekend. Jacob Fenton captured it after rushing for 188 yards in a win over Whittier, while Kirby Baynes was named the Defensive Player of the Week after an interception in the Chapman win.

Edwards now has 13 rushing touchdowns this season, tying him for fourth in CMS history, just two off the school record of 15, which has held for 35 years since Chris Dabrow set it in 1986. Edwards has two more games to try to tie that mark, or break it, beginning with Saturday's Chapman game and concluding with the finale at home against Pomona-Pitzer on Nov. 13.
