Andrew Mazzone's Three-Homer Game Leads CMS Baseball to Sweep of Redlands

AZUSA, Calif. - Andrew Mazzone hit three home runs in the first game of a doubleheader, setting a new team record for home runs in a season with 16, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team won 9-6 over Redlands, before completing the sweep with a 13-3, seven-inning win in the nightcap.

With the sweep, CMS moves to 20-10 overall on the season and gets back over .500 in league play at 8-7. Redlands falls to 17-16 overall and 9-12 in league play with the losses.

Mazzone came into the day with 13 home runs, one behind the CMS record set last year by current senior Julian Sanders. The two actually went back to back in the second inning to help CMS get out to a quick 7-1 lead. Mazzone actually tied the record with a solo shot in the first to knot the score up 1-1, and then hit a three-run blast to break the record in the second and make the score 6-1, before Sanders followed with a solo shot.

Redlands got all the way back to within 7-6, before Adam Dapkiewicz had an RBI single in the seventh to score Dillon Martin. Mazzone tacked on a solo shot in the eighth to make the final score 9-6.

Sanders was 4-for-5 in the opening game, and Mazzone finished 3-for-5 with five RBI. Martin and Jack Potter were each 2-for-4, as Potter added a two-run double in the first inning to stretch the lead to 3-0. Jackson Hisey threw 5.1 innings to get the win, and Andrew Blackett closed out over the final 2.1 innings to get the save.

Dapkiewicz had a huge day in the nightcap to help CMS complete the sweep, batting 4-for-4 with five RBI in a 13-3 win. He had a two-run single as part of a four-run first, after Potter plated the first run with a bases-loaded walk. Rider Gordon also added an RBI single.

After Redlands closed to within 4-3, Sanders had a bases-loaded single to score one run, Potter walked again to make it 6-3, and Dapkiewicz cleared the bases with a three-run double to break it open and make it 9-3.

Mazzone had a sacrifice fly in the first, and Martin had a two-run single, before Potter finished the scoring with an RBI single.

Tyler Shaw was 3-for-3 with three runs scored, while Blaise Heher was 2-for-3 with two runs for the Stags. Aaron Herst threw six innings to get the win for CMS.

The Stags will be back in action next weekend when they play a three-game series against Occidental, beginning with a Friday game at Pomona-Pitzer.
