Bryce Didrickson's Big Day Helps CMS Baseball to Split at Whitworth

SPOKANE, Wash. - Bryce Didrickson homered in both games, and had six RBI in the opener, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team earned a split at Whitworth in a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday, winning the opening game 15-4 and falling in the nightcap 7-4.

With the split, CMS now stands at 18-8 on the season, while Whitworth moves to 16-7.

Didrickson was 4-for-5 with six RBI in the opener, while Julian Sanders added a 2-for-4, four-RBI effort. The Stags built a 10-0 lead through four innings, and then added a five-run eighth to make it a 15-run effort.

CMS pushed across four runs in the second inning. After loading the bases, Tyler Shaw was hit by a pitch to force home the game's first run, and Andrew Mazzone followed with a walk. Sanders then drove home two with an RBI single to make it 4-0.

A five-run third inning featured a pair of two-run singles from Didrickson and Sanders, after Jack Potter had an RBI double. Didrickson had an RBI double in the fourth, and then capped off the CMS scoring with a three-run homer in the eighth.

Parker McGraw went eight innings to get the win and improve to 4-1 on the season, scattering six hits and striking out four.

In the nightcap, Whitworth went ahead 3-0 in the first, but Didrickson got CMS right back in it with a two-run shot in the fourth. Andrew Mazzone then tied it with a solo homer in the fifth, and after Whitworth got the lead back in the sixth, Mazzone scored on a sacrifice fly from Dillon Martin to make it a 4-4 game.

Jacob Doughty snapped the 4-4 tie with a solo homer in the bottom of the eighth for the Pirates, who added a two-run single to make it 7-4.

Sanders was 3-for-5 in the nightcap, while Mazzone was 2-for-4 with his solo homer.

The two teams will complete the three-game series tomorrow with a single game at 12 noon.
