CMS Baseball Erupts Offensively for 15-5 Win over Whittier

AZUSA, Calif. - Rider Gordon was 3-for-4 with a homer, three RBI, and three runs scored to lead a 16-hit attack as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team defeated Whittier 15-5 in the first of a three-game series at the Cougar Baseball Complex.

With the win, CMS moves to 16-6 on the year and 5-5 in conference play, while Whittier drops to 7-11-1 overall and 3-3 in league play with the loss.

Tyler Shaw (3-for-5, three runs) also had a three-hit game for CMS, while Andrew Mazzone (4-2-2-2), Julian Sanders (5-2-2-2), Dillon Martin (4-0-2-2), Jack Potter (3-3-2-1) and Blaise Heher (4-1-2-3) all had two hits and at least one RBI.

Parker McGraw settled in after a four-run second inning to throw a complete game to get the win and improve to 3-1, while saving the Stag bullpen for tomorrow's doubleheader.

Heher keyed a four-run first inning for the Stags with a two-run, two-out single, after Potter opened the scoring with an RBI single. After Whittier came back with four runs in the second to tie it, Mazzone hit a sacrifice fly to give CMS the lead for good.

Gordon had a two-run single to start a six-run third inning, all unearned runs with two outs, as CMS took control. After Shaw reached on an error, Mazzone tripled to center field and came home on an RBI double from Sanders. Martin then singled up the middle to plate Sanders.

Heher had his third RBI on a single in the fourth, and after a double play took him off the bases, Gordon hit a home run to left-center, his second round-tripper in as many games after a walk-off three-run shot on Sunday in a 6-5 win over Chapman.

Sanders had a two-out RBI single in the seventh to score Sanders, and Martin ended the game with an RBI double to right-center to enforce the 10-run rule.

The two teams will complete their series tomorrow with a doubleheader at Whittier, beginning at 11:30 a.m.
