CMS Baseball Earns Split to Take Series from Cal Lutheran

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Andrew Mazzone was 3-for-3 with two walks and two runs scored and Dillon Martin was 1-for-2 with three walks and two RBI as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team took a 6-3 over Cal Lutheran in the nightcap of a doubleheader on Saturday, earning a split after dropping the opener 5-2.

With the split, CMS moves to 14-3 overall and 3-3 in the league, while taking the series from Cal Lutheran after also winning the opening game yesterday at Biola.

CMS scored twice in the first inning to get off to a fast start after falling in the opener. Tyler Shaw led off with a single and Mazzone followed with a double to put runners on second and third. Julian Sanders singled home Shaw, and Martin plated Mazzone with an RBI groundout to make it a 2-0 game.

Bryce Didrickson pushed the lead to 3-0 in the second with he had an RBI single, scoring Adam Dapkiewicz, who led off with a single and went to second on a single from Jack Potter. After Cal Lutheran got a run back in the fourth, CMS scored twice in the fifth, as Rider Gordon singled, Mazzone singled, and after an error plated one run, Blaise Heher hit an RBI single to right.

Cal Lutheran scored once in the fifth and once in the sixth to get in to 5-3, but Lucas Welch threw the seventh and eighth, and Hamilton Finefrock threw the ninth to get the save, earning the final out via strikeout with two runners on. Martin gave CMS some insurance in the ninth with an RBI single to score Gordon, who singled and went to second on a Mazzone walk.

In the opening game, Gordon, Heher and Martin were each 2-for-4 and Sanders was 2-for-5, but CMS was unable to get on the board until it was trailing 5-0 in the eighth. Martin had an RBI single in the eighth to cut it to 5-1, and Gordon had an RBI double in the ninth before CMS got the tying run to the plate, but Joshua Kim was able to get the final out on a fly ball to center.

Bryant Smaaladen had a strong effort out of the CMS bullpen to give CMS a chance, allowing just one run on three hits over four innings of work.

CMS will be back in action next weekend for a three-game series with Chapman, including a doubleheader on Saturday which will be played at Pomona-Pitzer.
