CMS Baseball Splits High-Scoring Doubleheader with Whittier

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Tyler Shaw and Jack Potter each had three RBI, including one in a key five-run seventh, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team came back from a 5-0 deficit to win the nightcap of a doubleheader 13-10 to salvage a split with Whittier on Saturday afternoon at Pomona-Pitzer. 

With the split, CMS moves to 18-7 on the season and 8-4 in the SCIAC, while Whittier moved to 2-7 in the SCIAC (and 6-17 overall). 

Andrew Blackett threw 2.1 innings and allowed only one hit to pick up the win, earning his second of the season for CMS.

CMS had 13 total hits in the nightcap, led by a 3-for-3 effort with three runs scored from Shaw, while Julian Sanders was 2-for-6 with one RBI, and Paul Roche finished 2-for-5 with a run scored. 

After falling behind 3-0, Bryce Didrickson sparked some momentum for the Stags with a homer to right field in the bottom of the third and CMS then went on to score three runs in the bottom fourth. Shaw doubled to left, scoring Mitchell Mashiko went home and sending Cade Kritsch to third, and Kritsch then later scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-4. 

The Stags scored five runs in the seventh and added two runs late in the eighth to put the game away. Trishan Amruthur came home after Shaw was hit by a pitch and Sanders singled to right for an RBI, bringing in Kritsch for a 9-7 lead. Roche then added a single to right which brought in Shaw, and Sanders added another run after a passed ball, giving CMS an 11-7 advantage through seven innings. Shaw and Potter both added singles in the eighth to give CMS two more runs and a 13-9 lead through eight innings.

In the opener, Sanders and Roche combined for four hits and five RBI as the Stags finished with eight total hits. William DeForest added a two-run home run. 

CMS will be back in action when it travels to Washington next weekend for a three-game series against Pugent Sound, begining on Saturday at 11 a.m.
