CMS Baseball Falls in Series Opener to Cal Lutheran

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team fell in an early hole and dropped an 8-3 decision to Cal Lutheran in the first of a three-game series at Ullman Stadium.

The loss snaps a seven-game winning streak for 21st-ranked CMS, which falls to 15-5 on the year and 5-2 in SCIAC. The 23rd-ranked Kingsmen improve to 11-3 overall and 6-1 in league play.

Cal Lutheran scored three times in the first inning, and rode the strong pitching of Chris Torres, who allowed just two hits and a sacrifice fly from Julian Sanders in the sixth. Cal Lutheran responded, though, with four runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull ahead 8-1.

Kieran Sidebotham had a two-run double in the ninth to close out the scoring. Tyler Shaw finished with two hits on the day for CMS (2-for-4), while five other players had one. Pieter van Wingerden and Dallas Lind each had a scoreless inning of relief.

CMS will be back in action tomorrow for a doubleheader at Cal Lutheran, in which it will play as the home team and bat second.
