Unearned runs result in 4-3 loss to Ithaca

CLAREMONT, Calif. – In the first game against Ithaca College this week, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team was unable to produce late in the game and finished with the 4-3 loss. While senior MacKenzie Menthen (CMC) did not allow an earned run in seven innings of work, Ithaca's Tyler Hill went all nine innings and held the Stags at three runs off six hits.

The Stags scored one run in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, and all in different ways. Trey Smith (CMC) led off the fourth inning and got on via an infield error and ultimately was advanced over to third base by freshman Nick DeGallier's (CMC) single to left field. With just one out, the Bombers elected to try for a double play on an infield grounder but Chase Eller (CMC) beat the throw at first and Smith scored on the play.

The one earned run of the game was in the fifth inning when sophomore Alex Clemens (CMC) and Menthen hit back-to-back doubles to put another run on the board for CMS.

Eller earned two RBIs on the day without recording a hit. In the sixth inning, he bunted to the pitcher, scoring Ryan Motter (CMC) from third. Earlier in the inning, Motter hit a one-out double and ended up on third base after a throwing error and some miscommunication in the infield on base coverages.

All told, the Bombers put together a four-run third inning that was all they needed to stay ahead of CMS.

With both pitchers working efficiently, the game only lasted two hours and twenty minutes. Menthen and Motter finished with two hits each and John O'Malley (CMC) came in in relief and only allowed one hit.

The Stags (4-13) face Ithaca (3-4) again tomorrow at 2 p.m.
