Malea Martin Honored at Claremont McKenna Senior Awards Banquet

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Senior Malea Martin of the CMS cross country and track and field teams was honored as the top student in literature at the Claremont McKenna Senior Awards Banquet this week, prior to the Class of 2019's graduation ceremony this weekend.

Martin, who was recently nominated for Academic All-America honors as well, has been a part of a distance-running senior class that went a perfect 8-for-8 winning SCIAC Championships (four in cross country, four in track and field). Martin had a big part in helping the Athenas finish off the last title this spring, earning a second-place finish in the 10K and a third-place finish in the 5K on two straight days to give CMS 15 points, in a championship that it won by just three over Redlands (150-147).

In the fall, Martin earned All-West Region honors in cross country by coming in sixth place and leading the Athenas to a first-place finish. She also earned a career-best finish at the NCAA Division III Championships by coming in 75th place (out of 279 runners).

Martin graduates from CMS this weekend with a dual major in literature and government and a sequence in human rights studies. She is also actively involved with several non-profit organizations on campus and off campus, including United Way, the Mgrublian Center for Human Rights and Amnesty International. Her passion for human rights has also led her to volunteer work with Liberty in North Korea (LiNK), a grassroots organization in North America devoted to the North Korean human rights and humanitarian crises, buildOn, an organization which strives to build schools in some of the economically poorest countries on the planet, and as a treasurer for the United Way Youth Board of San Luis Obispo County.
