Abigale Johnson's Strong Effort Leads CMS Women's Cross Country at Stanford Invitational

PALO ALTO, Calif. - Sophomore Abigale Johnson was the top finisher for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Women's Cross Country team at the 6K Stanford Invitational on Saturday morning, finishing 61st out of 165 runners, including representatives from four Pac 12 teams.

Johnson helped the Athenas, who came into the race ranked No. 7 in Division III, to a 14th-place finish out of 19. Stanford, UCLA, Washington, Arizona State and Colorado were among the teams who placed in the top 10. 

Johnson ran a 22:38.40, finishing in the middle of a six-runner pack that included Caitlin Collier of Stanford, Kiera Marshall of Washington, Anna Pruter of Arizona State, Cayla Seligman of Colroado, and Sarah MacArthur of British Columbia. 

Senior Natalie Marsh was the second-fastest Athena, crossing the line in 22:45.10 to finish in 66th place overall. Senior Malea Martin was 77th in 22:56.40, while the other two CMS scorers were senior Morgan Blevins (99th, 23:24.50) and sophomore Dulcie Jones (23:30.40, 103rd). Freshman Riley Harmon was just behind Jones in sixth for the Athenas, finishing in 105th place with a 23:33.20. 

Freshman Sophie Gitlin (24:04.10), sophomore Georgia Scherer (24:09.10) and senior Matilda Msall (24:27.50) also competed at the event for the Athenas. 

CMS will be back in action next weekend across the street when they run in the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational, beginning at 7:30 a.m.
