Malea Martin Named SCIAC Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Senior Malea Martin was named the SCIAC Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week for meets through Sunday, Sept. 9, it was announced today by the league office.

Martin earned the honor after a second-place finish at the Biola Invitational on Saturday with a time of 18:30.29 over the 5K race. Her efforts helped the Athenas finish in a tie for first with Point Loma with 42 points apiece (although Point Loma won the tiebreaker for the official team title).

It marks the second straight week that the CMS Women's Cross Country team, which is ranked No. 15 in the nation in Division III, has earned the SCIAC Athlete of the Week honor. Last Monday, senior Natalie Marsh was the honoree after finishing first among collegiate competitors (second overall) at the Nationball Classic.

Martin was the fourth-place finisher in the SCIAC Championships a year ago, earning all-league honors. Two of the runners who finished ahead of her graduated, including former teammate Bryn McKillop, who was the individual champion.

The CMS women's cross country team will be back in action this weekend when it participates in the UC Riverside Invitational.
