Angie Gushue Earns Top Track Athlete Honors from SCIAC This Week
CLAREMONT, Calif. - Angie Gushue of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's track and field team was named the SCIAC Track Athlete of the Week for events through Sunday, March 12, the conference office announced today.
Gushue trimmed 12 seconds off her PR in the 1500 meters to finish fourth among collegiate runners (sixth overall) at the Occidental Distance Carnival. It was the second-fastest time in Division III so far this season, and she beat out Division I runners from Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine in her heat.
Gushue becomes the fourth different Athena honored by the SCIAC this season. Elizabeth Kirschner won Field Athlete of the Week accolades after CMS hosted the OIDFE Challenge, Emily Burger won it after the Pomona-Pitzer All-Comers meet, and Carolina DelVecchio earned Track Athlete of the Week honors after the first SCIAC Multi-Dual last week.
Brooke Simon earned All-America honors at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships this past weekend in the pole vault, but the SCIAC only considers outdoor track and field events for its weekly honors, so Simon wasn't eligible for the Field Athlete of the Week award this week.
CMS will be back in action this weekend at the Redlands Invitational.
