CMS Women's Tennis Begins Quest for Third Straight Title at Carnegie Mellon for NCAA Regionals

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The two-time defending national champion Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team will travel to Pittsburgh for the NCAA Division III Regionals this weekend, which will be hosted by Carnegie Mellon this Thursday-Saturday.

The Athenas come into the postseason at 22-1, after seeing their winning streak snapped at 45 matches in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament finals on Saturday, but are still one of the top contenders for the national championship, which will be held at Washington University in St. Louis from May 20-23.

Carnegie Mellon is ranked No. 14 and will be on the opposite side of the regional bracket from CMS. The Athenas will open play on Friday against the winner of Thursday's opening round match between Penn State-Harrisburg and Transylvania, while Carnegie Mellon will meet the winner of North Central and Grove City.

Saturday's regional final winner will move on to St. Louis, where it will match up in the quarterfinals against the winner of the bracket held at MIT, which also features Whitman, Endicott, Middlebury, Colby-Sawyer, TCNJ and Manhattanville.

CMS has won the last two national championships against the University of Chicago, winning 5-1 in 2022 and 5-3 last year. The Maroons are on the opposite side of the bracket again, which would mean that the Athenas would not have to face them until the national finals. The same is true of SCIAC rival Pomona-Pitzer, which would meet Chicago in the semifinals should they both advance that far, while CMS would draw Wesleyan in the semifinals if the seeds held true to form.

The Athenas have won three national titles in their history, winning their first in 2018 at home at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center against Emory. Biszantz will also serve as the host site of the NCAA Division III Championships next year for the first time since (it was scheduled to host in 2021, but the site was moved due to the pandemic).
