CMS Women's Tennis Co-Hosts ITA Regionals This Weekend

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Bisznatz Family Tennis Center will serve as one of the host sites for the 2023 ITA West Regionals this Friday-Sunday in Claremont, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's team begins its journey towards a third straight national title.

Pomona-Pitzer is the official hosts, and Sunday's championship rounds will be played at the Sagehens' Pauley Tennis Center, but Friday and Saturday will feature lots of action at Biszantz as singles players and doubles teams will try to advance to the ITA Cup national tournament in Rome, Georgia in two weeks.

Lindsay Eisenman will be the No. 2 seed in singles, which get started at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, behind only Angie Zhou, the defending NCAA singles champion. CMS also has the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds, which will he held down by Audrey Yoon and Alisha Chulani

Sena Selby and Ella Brissett are two of the No. 5 seeds in the tournament as well (the ITA seeds the top four players 1-4, and then has four No. 5 seeds), along with Marissa Markey of Pomona-Pitzer and Carmen Bufkin of Cal Lutheran, giving CMS five of the top eight in the field.

First-year Jade Haller opens for CMS against Sydney La of Chapman, with the winner potentially meeting top-seeded Angie Zhou in the second round. Anna Petrescu drew Maegan Deng of Redlands with the winner facing either Bufkin or Samantha Moore-Thomson of Pomona-Pitzer. Lily Walther will face Kristina Lee of Occidental, for the right to face either Markey or Olivia Rockwood of Redlands.

Doubles will start the day at 8:30 a.m., where the top seed is Brissett and Eisenman of CMS, who are 20-0 as doubles partners (18-0 last season and 2-0 at the season-opening Sagehen-Athena Invitational this year). Chulani and Yoon will be the No. 3 seed, and Selby and Haller will be the No. 4 seed for the Athenas as well. Walther and Katherine Wurster, who defeated Angie Zhou to win the ITA West Region singles title last year in three sets, will be one of the No. 5 seeds in doubles, and will face Sara Beckman and Natalie Sprenger of UC Santa Cruz.

Muduo Zhou and Petrescu will open against Markey and Alexandra Coleman of Pomona-Pitzer, who are one of the other No. 5 seeds as CMS will have five doubles teams in the field. A year ago, the Athenas had all four doubles semifinalists, with Eisenman earning All-America honors, along with senior Gabby Lee, by winning the finals.
