Wurster Pulls Out Three-Set Win in ITA Cup Consolations

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Katherine Wurster closed out her first appearance at the ITA Cup with a three-set win over Crystal Zhou of Carnegie Mellon to finish 2-1 at the three-day event at the Rome Tennis Center.

Wurster bounced back from an opening-round defeat by taking her first consolation match 6-3, 6-1 over Kelsey Dorr of Saint Catherine, and then earning a 7-5 win in the third set against Zhou. She took the first set 6-3, dropped the second set 6-2, and then bounced back for the tight three-set win.

Wurster had already earned All-America honors (which will be announced at the conclusion of the spring season) with a three-set win over Angie Zhou of Pomona-Pitzer in the ITA West Regional finals on Oct. 2. Angie Zhou was an NCAA runner-up in singles a year ago, and came in as the top seed in the West before Wurster was able to bounce back from a first-set defeat to earn a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 win.

Gabby Lee and Lindsay Eisenman were in action on Friday afternoon in the ITA Cup doubles quarterfinals and fell 6-4, 6-2 to Claudia Ng and Perene Wang of Chicago. They responded with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Angel Le and Arianna Castellanos Calderon of Whitman to end their Rome trip with a 2-1 mark as well. Devon Wolfe and Alisha Chulani closed out with another victory over a regional foe, defeating Cate Cushing and Trinity Levy of Trinity University 6-3, 6-1.

CMS will resume action in the spring as it looks to defend its 2022 NCAA Division III national title, opening up on Feb. 10 against Point Loma and hosting its first matches as defending national champions on Feb. 24 at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center against Brandeis and Southwestern (Texas).
