Five Athenas to Compete in ITA West Region Championship Matches

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Katherine Wurster will play for the ITA West Region singles championship on Sunday, while two CMS doubles teams will battle each other in the finals for All-America honors, following Saturday's action at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.

Alisha Chulani and Devon Wolfe, the tournament's second seed, will face Lindsay Eisenman and Gabby Lee, the fourth seed, in the doubles championship after both defeated pairs of their own teammates on Saturday. All five Athenas in the finals earned trips to the ITA Cup in Rome, Georgia in two weeks following their success this weekend.

CMS went 4-for-4 in winning their doubles quarterfinals matches to start the day on Saturday, with Chulani and Wolfe surviving with a 9-7 tiebreaker win (their second straight tiebreaker victory after an 8-6 win in the Round of 16) and Ella Brissett and Audrey Yoon knocking off the top seed from Pomona-Pitzer (Angie Zhou and Marissa Markey) by an 8-5 score.

Wurster and Sena Selby dominated the No. 6 seed (Kendall Bollock and Mia Goldstein) with an 8-1 win, and Eisenman and Lee won 8-2, to set up an All-CMS semifinal round.  Eisenman and Lee punched their ticket to Rome with an 8-4 win over Yoon and Brissett, the second year in a row that Lee has earned her way to the ITA Cup in doubles after making it with Crystal Juan last year. Wolfe and Chulani earned their way through with an 8-4 win over Wurster and Selby.

In singles, CMS began the day with seven of the eight players left, but top-seeded Angie Zhou of Pomona-Pitzer was able to earn two wins over Yoon (6-3, 6-4) and Selby (6-2, 7-6) to advance to the finals to meet Wurster and spoil the all-CMS singles flight. Wurster made it through with a win over Chulani in the quarterfinals (6-2, 6-4) and advanced past Eisenman when Eisenman retired after the first set. Selby advanced with a tight win over Brissett 6-2, 1-6, 10-3 and gave Zhou a battle in the second set before dropping the tiebreaker 7-5.

The All-CMS doubles final will take place tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center, with the singles final following at 11 a.m.
