Six Athenas Named to All-SCIAC Women's Tennis Teams, Juan Wins Character Award

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Six members of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team were chosen to the All-SCIAC teams, while Crystal Juan added the league's Character Award to her first-team accolades, the SCIAC office announced this morning.

Joining Juan on the All-SCIAC first team were Sydney Lee and Audrey Yoon, who have played 1-3 singles for the Athenas for most of the season, respectively. Earning spots on the second team were Sarah Bahsoun, Nikolina Batoshvili and Ella Brissett

Juan has had an impressive senior campaign for the Athenas, stepping into the No. 1 spot in the singles lineup after not typically playing singles for CMS as a first-year or sophomore. Her sophomore season in 2019-20, she earned All-America in doubles after reaching the semifinals of the ITA Cup, but only had a 4-1 record in singles, playing in one dual match out of 14 before the COVID shutdown.

This year, however, Juan emerged as the top singles player for the Athenas early in the spring season and has compiled a 15-8 record. She also has had that same 15-8 record in doubles, including a 9-1 in duals, while reaching the ITA Cup for the second time.  Her individual record this season has seen her win a big 6-1, 6-4 decision in a victory over No. 2 Emory, as well as a 7-5, 6-3 win against No. 8 Sewanee.

Lee has had a dominant season at No. 2 singles, where she has tallied a 14-2 record in duals and an 17-3 record overall. Her only dual defeats came against Division I Bowling Green, and a three-set defeat to No. 2 Pomona-Pitzer (which finished after the Sagehens had clinched the team win). Her season has seen her win 6-0, 6-0 against No. 9 Amherst, 6-2, 6-1 against No. 2 Emory, 6-2, 6-2 against No. 8 Sewanee, and 6-4, 6-1 against No. 8 Middlebury.  She has also tallied an 18-6 record in doubles on the year (13-4 in duals).

Yoon has also had a 14-2 singles record in duals in her rookie season with the Athenas. She played at No. 1 singles against No. 16 Bowdoin and earned a 6-0, 6-1 win, and also has a 6-1, 6-2 win over No. 2 Emory to her credit. She had a comeback three-set win against No. 8 Middlebury, an da tight 7-6, 7-5 win against No. 9 Amherst.

Bahsoun is undefeated in singles in dual matches at 9-0 (13-1 overall) and has a 17-8 record in doubles. She has picked up singles wins against No. 2 Pomona-Pitzer, No. 8 Middlebury and No. 9 Amherst in the No. 6 position. Batoshvili has a 13-5 record in singles and has had a big impact as a regular player at No. 1 doubles, where she is 18-6 (12-4 in duals). Brissett has been nearly perfect in singles, tallying a 20-2 record on the year (16-1 in duals), with the only dual loss a three-setter to Amherst (10-8 in the third-set tiebreaker). She has twice picked up singles wins over the No. 2 ranked team in the country at the time (Emory, Pomona-Pitzer).

CMS opens postseason play on Friday with a home match against Redlands in the SCIAC Semifinals, with the winner moving on to play in the championship match on Saturday.
