CMS Women's Tennis Opens ITA Indoors with 9-0 Win over Carnegie Mellon

DANVILLE, Ky. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team opened play at the ITA Indoor Nationals with a dominant effort, taking a 9-0 win over Carnegie Mellon to improve to 5-0 in dual matches this season.

With the win, CMS advances to the semifinals tomorrow at 1 p.m. Eastern time against archrival Emory, which also picked up a 9-0 win on opening day over host Centre College. In the other half of the bracket, Pomona-Pitzer advanced with a 9-0 win of its own (over Kenyon) and will face Chicago in the other semifinal, after the Maroons defeated MIT 6-3. 

CMS ended up sweeping doubles, after the No. 1 team of Gabby Lee and Sydney Lee prevailed in a tiebreaker for the third point 8-7. Sena Selby and Sarah Bahsoun captured an 8-4 win at No. 2, while Crystal Juan and Devon Wolfe captured an 8-5 win at No. 3. 

The Athenas then finished off the 9-0 win by sweeping singles without dropping a set. Audrey Yoon earned the most dominant performance for the Athenas, rolling to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5. Devon Wolfe earned a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 6, and Sydney Lee captured a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 2 as both senior dropped only four games on the day. 

Fellow senior Crystal Juan moved up to the No. 1 line and had a solid showing, winning 6-3, 6-4 to complete her singles-doubles sweep. Ella Brissett added a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 4, and Nikolina Batoshvili was a 6-4, 6-2 winner at No. 3. 

CMS will face Emory in the semifinals this time around, after meeting the Eagles for the ITA Indoor Championship in 2020 and coming away with a 5-4 win, just before the COVID shutdown. The Athenas also defeated Emory 5-4 for the 2018 NCAA Division III Championship at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
