Juan/Lee Face No. 4 Seed from Chicago in First Round of ITA Cup
CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis doubles team of Crystal Juan and Gabby Lee will open the ITA Cup on Thursday afternoon at 5:30 p.m. (EST) when they take on the fourth seed in the tournament from the University of Chicago.
Juan and Lee are one of 16 doubles teams to qualify for the ITA Cup, which will be held from Thursday-Sunday at the Rome Tennis Center. They earned their spot by reaching the finals of the ITA West Regionals last weekend, where they fell to the doubles team of Angie Zhou and Marissa Markey of Pomona-Pitzer, who they could meet again in the quarterfinals on Friday if they advance.
Standing in the way of a Sixth Street rematch are Shianna Guo and Sylwia Mikos of Chicago, who earned the championship of the ITA Central Regional, and will be the first opponent for the Athenas. The Pomona-Pitzer duo also needs to get through its Thursday afternoon opening round match against the doubles team from Kenyon.
The CMS half of the draw also features the No. 1 seed overall from Carnegie Mellon, one of the two doubles teams to qualify from defending national champion Emory, and a doubles team from Wesleyan, which edged CMS 5-4 for the 2019 national title.
The Division III championship will be held over three days from Thursday-Saturday. The winners of the four tournaments (NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NAIA and NJCAA) will then move on to compete for the overall ITA Cup Small College Championship on Sunday.
