CMS Women's Tennis Has 2021-22 Debut at Fall Invitational

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team competed for the first time since March of 2020 when it played the first day of its three-day Fall Invitational, which it is co-hosting with Pomona-Pitzer, on Friday at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.

The tournament features seven teams which represent all three NCAA Divisions and the NAIA. The Athenas battled Division II Concordia Irvine and Division I Cal State University Northridge in singles, and Division II Azusa Pacific and Biola of the NAIA in doubles on Friday. There is no team scoring at the event, which serves as a tune-up before the ITA West Regionals take place in Claremont from Oct. 1-3.  

CMS had its most success in singles against Concordia, sweeping all eight matches, with only one going more than two sets, as Arushi Malik took a third-set tiebreaker 10-4. Across the board the Athenas got better as the match went on, with five players winning 7-5 in the first set, and then winning the second sets without needing to extend past six games. 

The final set of matches on the day saw a tight battle with CSU Northridge in singles, with the teams playing only one pro set to eight games due to the tournament running late. Audrey Yoon, had a spirited comeback to win in a tiebreaker for her second singles win of the day, although the Matadors were able to go 5-2 with two tiebreaker wins of their own.

The tournament will continue at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow and then conclude on Sunday, when co-hosts Pomona-Pitzer and CMS face each other in doubles.
