CMS Women's Tennis Sweeps Home Tripleheader on Saturday

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The second-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team played three matches in one day and won all three, defeating SCIAC rivals Occidental and Whittier by 9-0 scores in the afternoon and then capping off the day with a 5-2 win over San Diego Christian in the evening.

With the three wins, CMS now stands at 6-0 on the season, including 2-0 in conference play.

The closest match of the day came in the evening, with the Athenas prevailing 5-2 over San Diego Christian. The doubles point went to the Athenas after they took two of the three courts, with senior Madison Shea and junior Rebecca Berger dominating for an 8-1 win at No. 3 and senior Nicole Tan and first-year Justine Leong taking an 8-2 win at No. 2 for the clinch.

Singles saw senior Anastasia Bryan-Ajania give the Athenas a quick 2-0 lead with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles, and first-year Gabby Lee won a convincing 6-2, 6-0 decision at No. 3 to give CMS its third point. Leong was cruising early at No. 1 singles, taking the first set 6-0, but had to fight off Sarah Urbanek in the second set. Urbanek broke Leong's serve to pull within 5-3, but Leong broke right back to seal the match and give CMS the clinch.

Junior Caroline Cox added the fifth point for CMS in a third-set tiebreaker, winning 6-2, 2-6, 10-4.

CMS wasn't tested in the early matches against SCIAC foes, taking 9-0 wins in both. Berger had a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles against Occidental, while sophomore Sydney Lee (6-1, 6-0), Gabby Lee (6-0, 6-1), Shea (6-0, 6-0), Bryan-Ajania (6-3, 6-0) and first-year Anna Kern (6-0, 6-3) cruised at the No. 2-6 lines.

In the Whittier win, senior Catherine Allen earned a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles. Cox (6-2, 6-0), Bahsoun (6-0, 6-1), sophomore Devon Wolfe (6-0, 6-0), Shea (6-1, 6-0) and sophomore Georgia Tuckerman (6-3, 6-0) all added straight set wins as well. The Athenas also only lost one game in doubles, with Allen and sophomore Crystal Juan taking an 8-0 win at No. 1 and Kern and Bryan-Ajania taking an 8-0 win at No. 3.

CMS will be back in action next Saturday when it hosts Southwestern (Texas) for a 2 p.m. contest.
