CMS Women's Tennis Opens Dual Schedule with 6-1 Win over Hawaii Pacific

HONOLULU, Hawaii - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team swept all three doubles lines for the first point, and then won five of the six singles lines as it captured a 6-1 win over Hawaii Pacific on Friday in its first dual match of the 2019-20 season at the Central Oahu Regional Park.

Senior Catherine Allen and junior Caroline Cox were reunited at No. 1 doubles for the first time since winning the NCAA Division III Doubles Championship last May, as Cox studied abroad in the fall. The duo picked up a 7-5 win in doubles, and then each won their singles match, with Allen earning a 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 win at No. 2 and Cox capturing a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 4.

Sophomore Crystal Juan and first-year Anna Kern were also back in action together in doubles after earning All-America honors in the fall by reaching the semifinals of the ITA Division III Cup in Rome, Georgia. They earned a solid 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles, as did sophomore Sarah Bahsoun and senior Nicole Tan, who fell to Cox and Allen in last year's All-CMS NCAA Division III final.

After taking the doubles point, CMS was able to get a quick clinch with three straight-set wins, including Cox's at No. 4. First-year Justine Leong, who swept the ITA Cup Singles and Doubles championships in the fall, picked up a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles to continue the impressive start to her collegiate career. Bahsoun, meanwhile, prevailed 8-6 in a first-set tiebreaker and went on to a 7-6, 6-1 at No. 5.

Allen added another point to the CMS total with her three-set win at No. 2 singles, while senior Anastasia Bryan-Ajania added another singles point with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 win at No. 6, making the final score 6-1.

CMS and Hawaii Pacific will meet for a second match tomorrow at 11:30 a.m., which will take place at Kamehameha High School.
