Five Athenas Named to All-SCIAC Women's Tennis Teams

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The No. 2-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team, which heads into postseason play with a 21-1 record, had five players chosen to the All-SCIAC team in a vote of the conference's coaches, the league office announced today.

Four of the Athenas were selected to the All-SCIAC first team, with junior Catherine Allen, junior Nicole Tan, sophomore Rebecca Berger and freshman Sydney Lee each earning that distinction. Sophomore Caroline Cox, who plays No. 5 singles and is part of the No. 1 ranked doubles team in the nation with Allen, was named to the second team.

Allen nearly made it through the entire regular season without losing a dual match in singles, before falling on the last day of the regular season to Caroline Casper of Pomona-Pitzer, the SCIAC's Women's Tennis Athlete of the Year. Allen stands at 16-2 in singles this season (12-1 in duals), all playing at No. 1, and is 25-2 in doubles, with no losses to Division III schools, and went over the 100-win mark for her career at the season-opening fall tournament in September.

Tan heads into the SCIAC Tournament with an 11-3 mark in singles after studying abroad in the fall, as well as a 16-2 mark in doubles, typically playing at the No. 2 position in both. She also went over 100 wins when the Athenas defeated Williams in March, and has been named an All-America three times in her career (twice in doubles and once in singles).

Berger is undefeated in dual matches in singles this season, mostly at No. 3, standing at 13-0 (and 15-1 overall, including the fall ITA West Regional). She was named the SCIAC Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week after earning the clinching point in a third-set tiebreaker in a 4-3 win over UC San Diego on opening weekend, and also won in a third-set tiebreaker against No. 1 Emory at the ITA Indoor Nationals.

Lee has had a strong freshman campaign for the Athenas, leading the team in singles wins with 21 (21-4), including 16-2 in singles , where she usually plays No. 4. She enters the postseason with an 11-match win streak in singles, second behind Berger's 13 on the team, and was a perfect 5-0 in SCIAC matches. She has mostly been a singles specialist, but has an 11-4 record as well in doubles, including 3-0 in SCIAC.

Cox has had a terrific sophomore season, tallying a 23-1 record in doubles with Allen (with the only loss to Division II UC San Diego) and a 15-3 mark in singles (13-2 in duals). She was also very close to a perfect record in singles in dual matches, as one of her two losses came against Caltech when she moved up to the No. 2 spot on the ladder and fell in a third-set tiebreaker (10-8) to Anna Tifrea, and the other came at the ITA Indoors in three sets to Chicago (7-5 in the third set). She also had a straight-set (6-3, 6-1) win against No. 1 Emory at the ITA Indoors, and had a 6-0, 6-0 win against No. 13 WashU.

CMS begins play in the SCIAC Tournament tomorrow, when it hosts Redlands in one of two semifinals at 4 p.m. A win in that match would enable the Athenas to host the conference championship match on Saturday at 1 p.m. against the winner of the other semifinal between Pomona-Pitzer and Caltech.
