CMS Women's Tennis Responds to Early Challenge, Storms Past Chicago 8-1

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team was challenged by No. 9 Chicago in doubles, dropping the first point of the match, but it rallied to take a 2-1 lead and then swept singles for an 8-1 win over the Maroons on Friday morning at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.

With the win, CMS now improves to 15-1 on the season, including eight in a row since suffering its only loss of the season to Emory at the ITA Indoor Championships. Chicago sees its record slip to 6-3 with the loss. 

The Maroons won the first point at No. 2 doubles, and the No. 1 team of junior Catherine Allen and sophomore Caroline Cox fell into an early 4-0 hole at No. 1 doubles, while No. 3 (junior Madison Shea and sophomore Rebecca Berger) were locked in a tight match at No. 3. Shea eventually came through with the winning volley at No. 3 for a tight 8-6 win, tying the score 1-1. 

Cox and Allen, meanwhile, came back with three straight wins to cut the Chicago lead to 4-3, and after an exchange of holds, finally pulled even at 6-6 with a break. The match went to a tiebreaker at 7-7 and the Athenas were able to take control, finishing it quickly 7-2 to give CMS the 2-1 lead after doubles. 

Singles saw the Athenas assert themselves, as Cox and Allen each won their first sets 6-0 at No. 1 and No. 5, respectively, while freshman Sarah Bahsoun was up 5-0 at No.6 before settling for a 6-1 win, which was also the score of Berger's first set at No. 3. CMS won the first sets on five of six courts, and Allen was the first one to get her win in the books at No. 1, capturing a 6-0, 6-2 win to put the Athenas ahead 3-1. 

Cox had to battle a little more in the second set, but was able to capture a 6-0, 6-4 win for the fourth point, and Bahsoun then finished off the team clinch with a pair of backhand winners to capture a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 6. Berger followed with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 3 and freshman Sydney Lee took her match 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4. Junior Nicole Tan finished the CMS singles sweep by coming back for a 3-6, 6-1, 10-6 win at No. 2, making the final score 8-1. 

CMS will be back in action tomorrow when it takes on No. 5 Middlebury for a 12 p.m. contest at Biszantz Family Tennis Center, looking to add another top 10 win to its week, after defeating No. 5 Williams on Wednesday and No. 9 Chicago this morning.
