Athenas Sweep Pomona-Pitzer, Claim SCIAC Tournament Title

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team claimed the 2018 SCIAC Tournament Title on Saturday with a 5-0 sweep of the No. 7 Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens. The Athenas took a 3-0 lead after doubles before completing the sweep with two quick victories in singles to clinch the match and earn the Automatic Qualifier to the NCAA Tournament that begins next week.

The Athenas will learn their Tournament draw on Monday morning at 9:00 a.m. when the bracket is released on NCAA.com in a press release.

Just as they did on Friday, the Athenas swept their way thought doubles play to take a commanding 3-0 lead into singles play. CMS earned a pair of 8-4 victories in the #2 and #3 doubles matches and an 8-5 win on the top doubles court. The duo of Catherine Allen and Caroline Cox continued their winning ways, collecting their sixth-straight doubles victory at #2 doubles on Saturday with an 8-4 triumph. Their win streak dates back to the last week of March. On the season, the pair holds a 19-2 record on the year.

Mudders, Kyla Scott (HMC) and Juliette Martin (HMC) teamed up at #3 doubles to match the Allen/Cox duo with an 8-4 victory. Scott and Martin have dropped just one match this season in doubles play and currently hold a 19-1 record in 2018. On the top court, Lindsay Brown (CMC) and Nicole Tan (CMC) wrapped up doubles play with a convincing 8-5 victory to put the Athenas in the driver's seat heading to the six singles matches.

Tan earned the first singles point for the Athenas on court one, topping Pomona-Pitzer's Caroline Casper in straight sets by a score of 6-3, 6-1. Rebecca Berger (CMC) then clinched the match for CMS on court five by an identical score of 6-3, 6-1.

As mentioned, the victory moves the Athenas into the NCAA Tournament by way of the Automatic Qualifier from the SCIAC. CMS will learn of their draw on Monday morning at 9:00 a.m., check cmsathletics.org later in the week for more information on the NCAA Tournament.
