Athenas Sweep Oxy and No. 19 Brandeis on Perfect Saturday
CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team earned a pair of 9-0 sweeps on Saturday. First CMS took care of the Occidental Tigers in a SCIAC match to improve to 3-0 in conference. Later in the afternoon, the No. 19 Brandeis Judges fell by the same 9-0 score. The Athenas run their overall record to a perfect 8-0 on the season.
Match One – CMS defeats Occidental – 9-0
Against Occidental, The Athenas swept their three matches in doubles play to take an early 3-0 lead. The No. 3 doubles duo of Lauren Yamagami (CMC) and Anastasia Bryan-Ajania (SC) breezed through their match, winning 8-0. In the No. 2 doubles match Madison Shea (CMC) and Rebecca Berger (CMC) dropped just one game en route to an 8-1 victory and at the top doubles spot, Kyla Scott (HMC) and Juliette Martin (HMC) claimed an 8-2 victory.
In singles play, Caroline Cox (CMC) earned the most convincing victory in the No. 5 match. She earned a straight-set victory without dropping a game at 6-0, 6-0. Anastasia Bryan-Ajania (SC) and Lauren Yamagami (CMC) also earned 6-0 victories in the first set of their singles match. Both dropped games in their second set, but claimed convincing victories with Bryan-Ajania winning 6-0, 6-1 and Yamagami claiming a 6-0, 6-2 win.
Only one set in singles play was remotely close as the second set at the top singles spot was won 7-5 by Madison Shea over Samantha Farrell. Shea took the match 6-1, 7-5.
Match Two – CMS defeats No. 19 Brandeis – 9-0
In the afternoon session, the Athenas squared off with the No. 19 Brandeis Judges. The Athenas earned their fifth-straight 9-0 victory with a convincing victory over the national ranked Judges. Just as they did in the morning, CMS swept the doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead.
The top two doubles teams earned 8-1 victories to start the afternoon off right for the Athenas. Kyla Scott and Juliette Martin teamed up in the No. 3 doubles match and pulled off an 8-4 victory to sweep doubles play.
Play then turned to the six singles competitions. The Athenas were dominate in all six matches with CMS earning straight-set victories in all of them to complete their second 9-0 sweep on the day. In five of the six singles matches, the Athenas dropped less than three games. Catherine Allen (SC) won 6-0, 6-0 at the top singles spot and Kyla Scott, Caroline Cox, and Anastasia Bryan-Ajania dropped just one game apiece to claim solid victories.
As mentioned the Athenas push their overall record to 8-0 on the season and will next take the court on Friday when they travel to Southwestern (TX) at 2:00 p.m. The weekend trip will also include matches against Trinity (TX) and East Texas Baptist on Satudrday.
