Final SCIAC match goes to Athenas on Senior Night

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team rolled to a 9-0 victory over the University of La Verne in its final SCIAC match of the 2016 regular season. The Athenas finish at 8-1 and go into the SCIAC tournament as the No. 2 seed.

Before the match, head coach Dave Schwarz recognized the three graduating seniors for CMS: Nithya Menon (HMC), Samantha Eagle (SCR) and Caroline Ward (CMC).

The doubles matches finished 1-2-3 with scores of 8-1, 8-1, and 8-2. Ward and Katie Kuosman (CMC) took ULV's Bridget Etchegaray and Janae Chinn, only losing one game near the end. At No. 2 doubles, Kyla Scott (HMC) and Jessie Cruz (CMC) beat Savanah Goode and Shenelle Trujillo with ease and finally, Bria Smith (CMC) and Lindsay Brown (CMC) seemed to be having a great time as they smiled their way to their 8-2 victory.

In singles play, Kuosman wrapped up first, winning easily 6-0, 6-0. At No. 3 singles, Brown dropped two games in the first set and then went 6-0 in the second, winning the final point on a perfectly placed drop shot at the net.

Cruz and Scott ended their matches within minutes of each other and both won 6-0, 6-1. Cruz continues on her streak of being unbeaten in singles play and Scott had her opponent, Trujillo, chasing back and forth on the court, unable to keep up with Scott's game plan.

Smith also won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6 singles. Ward at No. 1 singles was the final match to finish as Etchegaray rallied to tie up the second set at 2-2 and then went ahead 3-2. Ward came back to win the final four games of the set for the 9-0 sweep of the Leos.

CMS next competes in the SCIAC Tournament. As the No. 2 seed, they will host on Friday, May 6 for one match and then Pomona-Pitzer was selected to host the rest of the tournament May 7-8.
