Makeup match goes to Athenas 8-1
CLAREMONT, Calif. – After getting rained out last Friday, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team beat Redlands 8-1 on Friday evening at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. CMS took an early 3-0 lead sweeping the doubles competition and then went on to roll into the 8-1 victory.
Doubles play was highlighted by freshman Jessie Cruz (CMC) and sophomore Kyla Scott (HMC) who earned the first point for the Athenas. The pair got off to a slow start but then ultimately won 8-2 over UR's Elizabeth Johnson and Kate Dolan.
In the singles play, Scott finished first winning the first set 6-1 but then going down 0-2 in the second. After being broken, Scott won the next six games straight. Sophomore Lindsay Brown (CMC) clinched the match for CMS with a win at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-1.
The only point that Redlands earned was at No. 1 singles. Natalie Etchegaray, the No. 35 ranked player took the long first set by winning the tiebreak 11-9 and then won the second set 6-2.
Sophomore Bria Smith (CMC) and junior Katie Kuosman (CMC) each blanked their opponents in the first set of singles play.
The Athenas (13-4, 4-1 SCIAC) continue with conference play and host Occidental at 10 a.m. tomorrow, Saturday, April 16.
