Two convincing wins for Athenas

CLAREMONT, Calif. – A successful doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 27 saw the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team control the action and dominate the Caltech Beavers and the Point Loma Sea Lions, both by 8-1 scores.

CMS 8, Caltech 1
In the morning match against Caltech, CMS swept the doubles competitions with sophomore Kyla Scott (HMC) and senior Nithya Menon (HMC) finishing first following an 8-1 rout. Both teams of freshman Jessie Cruz (CMC) with sophomore Bria Smith (CMC) and Lindsay Brown (CMC) with Lauren Livingston (CMC) earned 8-1 wins in their doubles contests.

Cruz took home the first singles win for CMS (6-0, 6-1) with Scott (6-1, 6-0) close behind. Brown and Livingston came out on top by identical 6-2, 6-2 scores and senior Samantha Eagle (SCR) also came away with a 6-0, 6-4 singles win. Caltech's Cecilia Andrews won the Beavers' only match of the day against Menon 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-7).

Results

CMS 8, Point Loma 1
In match two against Point Loma, Brown and Smith were the first doubles team to complete their contest winning by a score of 8-3. No. 1 duo of senior Caroline Ward (CMC) and junior Katie Kuosman (CMC) earned an 8-3 victory as well over Point Loma's top pair of Regina Von Koch and Nikki Newell. Scott and Cruz wrapped up a doubles sweep for the Athenas with an 8-6 win of their own.

Singles matches saw Cruz once again dominate her competition (6-1, 6-1), followed by Scott (6-1, 6-3) and Smith (6-0, 6-1). No. 3 Brown handled her matchup with Nicole Camaratta by scores of 6-4, 6-2 and Kuosman earned a win over Von Koch 6-4, 6-3. The only loss for CMS came in the No. 1 singles match of Ward vs. Newell, with Newell taking home the victory by 6-2, 6-2 marks.

The Athenas (5-1, 2-0 SCIAC) have a conference match at Whitter on Feb. 28, before another four-match home stand beginning Mar. 8 against Carnegie Mellon.
