Dominant win for Athenas in first home match of 2016

CLAREMONT, Calif. – In their third match of the 2016 season, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team earned a 9-0 sweep of Brandeis University.

The Athenas came out strong in doubles matches. The No. 1 pairing of senior Caroline Ward (CMC) and junior Katie Kuosman (CMC) took down Olivia Leavitt and Haley Cohen of Brandeis 8-3. In Athenas' largest doubles margin of victory of the day, sophomore Kyla Scott (CMC) and freshman Jessie Cruz (CMC) defeated Sophia He and Emily Eska to earn an 8-1 victory. Finally, the No. 3 duo of sophomores Lindsay Brown (CMC) and Bria Smith (CMC) won 8-5 over Sarita Biswas and Keren Khromchenko to complete the 3-0 doubles sweep.

Five out of the six singles matches were won in straight sets. Kuosman dominated in her contest with Leavitt by scores of 6-0, 6-1. Brown (6-3, 6-1), Scott (6-3, 6-4), Cruz (6-4, 6-1) and Smith (6-3, 6-2) each also earned victories in singles. A tightly contested  No. 1 matchup featured Ward battling Cohen, with Ward earning the final win for CMS 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

The 2-1 (1-0) Athenas continue a four-match home stretch Feb. 26 against Bates, before a Feb. 27 doubleheader with Point Loma and Caltech.
