6-3 win over No. 12 D-II program highlights Nor Cal trip for CMS

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – In two matches over the weekend in Northern California, the No. 5 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team went 2-0, including a 6-3 win over NCAA Division II No. 12 Academy of Art University on Feb. 27. CMS closed out the trip with a sweep of UC Santa Cruz, 9-0, on Sunday. CMS remains undefeated on the season at 5-0.

The first match of the trip, originally scheduled for Saturday, ended up being played Friday because of rain. CMS took a 2-1 advantage at doubles behind wins in No. 1 (Caroline Ward and Katie Kuosman) and No. 3 doubles (Lindsay Brown and Bria Smith) with the score ending 8-5 in both. Academy of the Art's Jenny Johansson and Michelle Dandik dropped CMS' Sarah Kukino and Kyla Scott 8-6 in what ended up being the closest doubles match-up, in the second position.

After playing the first few matches of the season at No. 3 singles, Kuosman and Kukino traded spots against Academy of the Art and Kuosman won 6-2, 7-6 (4), 10-5. Kukino also earned a win after the move, 6-4, 6-3 over Dandik. Brown (6-3, 6-1) and Scott (6-4, 6-3) came up with key victories in the fourth and sixth positions, respectively, for CMS.

Results

CMS 9, Santa Cruz 0 (March 1)

The weekend trip ended with a lopsided sweep over Santa Cruz as the closest doubles match was 8-3 and CMS took all singles matches in two sets. The closest doubles match of the afternoon came in No. 1 doubles as Ward and Kuosman defeated Courtney Lymburner and Katy Collins 8-3. Kukino and Scott won 8-1 and Smith and Brown won as well, not losing a single game.

In No. 5 singles, Scott didn't lose a game, winning in two sets over Zoe Middleton-Brook. Ward (6-1, 6-1), Kuosman (6-1, 6-2), Brown (6-1, 6-0), Smith (6-0, 6-1) and Lauren Livingston (6-1, 6-3) also won their respective matches.

Results

CMS gets into conference play at home against Cal Lutheran on Saturday, March 7. They then jump back into non-conference play with seven matches out of league in what is one of the tougher parts of the 2015 schedule.
