CMS edges out La Verne for 2014 SCIAC Women’s Tennis Championships title
CLAREMONT, Calif. – For the third season in a row and the
16th time in school history, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps
women’s tennis team has won the conference championship.
Top-seeded CMS defeated third-seeded La Verne 5-4 in the finals of
the 2014 SCIAC Women’s Tennis Championships at the Biszantz
Family Tennis Center. In the third place match, Redlands defeated
Pomona-Pitzer 7-2 while Chapman defeated Whittier 7-2 in the fifth
place match and Caltech topped Cal Lutheran 6-3 in the seventh
place match.
CMS 5, La Verne 4 (Championship Match)
La Verne got the first point of the match with an 8-1 win
in No. 2 doubles as Andrea Madrigal and
Bridget Etchegaray defeated CMS’
Chloe Dobbert and Sarah Kukino.
CMS then came back and won the remaining two doubles points as
Caroline Ward and Katie Kuosman
(No. 1 doubles) along with Yvonne Likomanova and
Crystal Lim (No. 3 doubles) won 8-3.
Taking two of three doubles matches proved to be crucial as La
Verne and CMS had three extremely competitive matches in the top
three singles positions. The bottom half of CMS’ lineup
sealed the win as CMS took No. 4, 5 and 6 singles. Victoria
Santoro in No. 6 singles gave CMS a 5-1 lead as she
clinched the championship match for CMS with a 6-4, 6-1 win over
Bridget Etchegaray. In the top three singles matches, La Verne won
each match with Madrigal, Laina Matsuda and
Jeanette Losaria all getting wins, two of those
matches in tiebreakers.
Redlands 7, Pomona-Pitzer 2 (3rd Place Match)
Down 2-1 after doubles, No. 4 Redlands swept its way
through singles play to win the third place match 7-2 over No. 2
seed Pomona-Pitzer at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
Pomona-Pitzer’s No. 1 doubles team of Sammy
Chao and Lea Lynn Yen (8-6) and No. 3
doubles team of Maddie Gordon and Rosemary
Pelch (8-5) got Pomona-Pitzer off to a strong start.
Redlands took the top three singles matches in two sets as
Jessica Ly, Natalie Etchegaray,
Ceara Sumida, Lauren Villanueva,
Emily Murnin and Paige Press all
got singles wins for Redlands.
Chapman 7, Whittier 2 (5th Place Match)
Chapman took both doubles (2-1) and singles play (5-1) en
route to a 7-2 victory over Whittier in the fifth place match at
Pomona-Pitzer’s Pauley Tennis Complex. Sophia
Duong and Kelley Klebenow got Chapman the
first point of the match in No. 3 doubles with an 8-3 win.
Whittier’s lone doubles point came in the No. 2 position as
Liliana Serylo and Benay
Weintraub won 8-6.
Duong clinched the match for Chapman with a 6-4, 6-4 win over
Serylo in No. 3 singles.
Caltech 6, Cal Lutheran 3 (7th Place Match)
Caltech took both doubles (2-1) and singles play (4-2) as
they defeated Cal Lutheran 6-3 in the seventh place match at
Pomona-Pitzer’s Pauley Tennis Complex. Rebekah
Kitto and Monica Li in No. 1 doubles for
Caltech got Caltech on the board first with an 8-4 win. Cal Lu got
its doubles point in the No. 2 position as Lindsay
Murphy and Dana Rauqust won 8-5.
Caltech got singles wins in the No. 1, 3, 5 and 6 positions as
Kitto (6-0, 6-1), Jenny Sheng (6-1, 6-0),
Sophia Chen (6-1, 6-1) and Michelle
Tang (4-6, 6-4, 10-5) all won their respective
matches.
