Nine Athenas Honored on CSCAA Scholar All-America Teams

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Nine members of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's swimming and diving team earned spots on the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Scholar All-America teams, the organization announced today.

To qualify for First-Team Scholar All-America, student-athletes must have earned a GPA of 3.5 or higher and participated in their national championship. Second-Team selections must have also earned a 3.5 GPA or higher and met a "B" time standard for the national championship or qualified for a diving zone qualification meet.

Five Athenas earned their way onto the first team after participating in the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships in Greensboro, North Carolina: Sun Young Byun, Madeleine Kan, Mackenzie Mayfield, Katy Shaw and Allyson Yao. Four other members of the team were second-team selections, including Milan Manfredi, Alexis Romero, Revere Schmidt, and Anna Zeren

Byun is a psychology major at Claremont McKenna, and qualified for nationals in the 100-yard and 200-yard butterfly. Kan is an engineering major at Harvey Mudd, and competed in the 100 fly, the 50 free and the 100 back at the NCAA Championships. Mayfield majors in biology at Claremont McKenna and earned spots in the NCAA Championships in the 200 IM and the 100 breast. Shaw majors in engineering at Harvey Mudd and earned spots in both distance events at nationals (500 free, 1650 free), while Yao is a computer science major at Harvey Mudd and competed in the 200 IM and 400 IM. 

Manfredi earned a "B" cut in the 100-yard breaststroke and majors in data science at Claremont McKenna. Schmidt earned a "B" cut in the 1650, while also competing in the 500 free and the 400 IM regularly for CMS. Romero and Zeren both qualified for the region qualification meet at Trinity (Texas), with Romero majoring in biology at Claremont McKenna and Zeren a biology major at Scripps.
