CMS Women's Swim and Dive Gears up For SCIACs with Strong Showing at UC Santa Barbara

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's swimming and diving team sent several of its swimmers to the UC Santa Barbara Invitational to compete against a strong field of Division I swimmers on Saturday, and produced several NCAA "B" Cut times as it prepares for the SCIAC Championships in 19 days.

Mackenzie Mayfield won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:04.81, winning by five-hundredths of a second over Silvia Faraboschi of UC Santa Barbara. She also added a third-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly in 55.77, which was an NCAA "B" cut and moved her into sixth place in CMS history. 

The 800-yard freestyle relay team recorded the fourth-best time in CMS history, with Sun Young Byun, Allison Nguyen, Corley Smith and Katy Shaw finishing in 7:31.69, which came in under the NCAA "B" cut time by eight and a half seconds.  The Atehnas were also only 3.45 seconds behind UC Santa Barbara head-to-head. 

Byun's leadoff 200-yard leg of the 800 free relay (1:51.75) also moved her into second place in CMS history, behind only record-holder Ella Blake, who swam a 1:53.30 in 2022 and gave her an NCAA "B" cut. 

Nguyen, meanwhile, moved into the top 10 in CMS history in the 400 IM, clocking a 4:32.77, as the Athenas now have three active swimmers in the top 10 from times this season (Allyson Yao third in 4:30.03, and Revere Schmidt in tenth in 4:33.22). 

Schmidt also was a close second in the 1650 in 17:19.73, knocking 23.75 seconds off her personal best time and putting her in tenth place in CMS history, while earning a "B" cut as well. She also cut two seconds off her personal best in the 200 free with a 1:57.17. 

CMS will be back in action next week for its final regular season tune-up when it competes at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational. The Athenas will then head to East Los Angeles College from Feb. 22-25 as they try to defend their SCIAC Championship.
